Part of my final project at Vancouver Film School. Derelict follows an exploration ship, the Achimi, and its crew, as they find the remnants of an alien civilization, and awaken the creature that destroyed them.
I wanted to create a variety of helmet designs for my protagonist, the captain of the Achimi. Since I wanted to design for a TV show, I had a few requirements for the design. First was that it had to have a clear and open face, so that you can see the actor on the inside. Second, it had to be feasible to actually construct it and be usable in reality. Third, I wanted to make sure the design was recognizable and distinct.
To discover the designs, I did some quick sculpts of the helmets within Zbrush. I then did a basic shading filter over top to add linework, and brought that into photoshop, where I added material values, shadows, and highlights. The final design, pictured on the right, was fully textured in Substance Painter.
Each helmet design is under 10,000 polygons.
